Graham D. Ivey, 96, joined his heavenly father on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals. Born in Edgecombe County, NC to the late Waverly Howard Ivey and Anna Stone Ivey, he was preceded in death by his son, Lt. Cmdr. Stewart Douglas Ivey USN. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Waverly, Oliver, and Bernard Ivey, Margaret Harris, and Joyce Swain. Mr. Ivey proudly served his country during WWII with the 8th Army Air Force, 9th Complement SQ in Cheddington, England, reaching the rank of Tech. Sgt. He was past commander of the VFW of Candler, Post 9939. Mr. Ivey was a member of Hominy Baptist Church, and along with his wife, received Volunteer of the Year for Day Stay service. He volunteered at ABCCM and with the Oteen veterans. Serving others was a priority for Mr. Ivey. Graham retired from Pierce Young Angel Company and worked at the NC Farmer's Market until he was 87. One of his greatest enjoyments was his Sunday dinners at the "chicken place," Zaxby's Exit 44. He enjoyed life and was witty, with a great sense of humor. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Carolyn Ward Ivey; daughter, Susan Ivey Smith (Jim); step-son, Carl Redmon (Linda); grandson, James Lee Smith, and granddaughter, Bridgett Smith Helm (Daniel); step-grandson, Charles Lee Redmon; two step-granddaughters; great-grandson, Luke Daniel Helm; sister, Ruth M. Mobley; brother, James L. Ivey; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Hominy Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Joe Yelton officiating on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by the NC Honor Guard. Donations may be made to the DayStay Program, Hominy Baptist Church, 135 Candler School Road, Candler, NC 28715 Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  1. Mr. Ivey was one of the sweetest men I ever met. He was greatly loved by his daughter, Susan, who talked about him often during our many years working together and becoming close friends teaching at the Juvenile Evaluation Center. I have him to thank for my sweet Yorkie, Rascal!!

  4. Mr. Ivey was our favorite neighbor. He had the sweetest smile, and he was always so funny. We will miss talking to him, but we know he is in a much better place. We will see him again one day. Our prayers are with you.

  7. My thoughts and not prayers are with the family of Graham. A great man who laughed a ll the time. When growing up he joked and spoiled me as much as Susan. We enjoyed our rides to pick him up at PYA laughter filled the car. God bless less you all will see you soon.
