Gregory Curtis Wilcox, 49, of Candler, died tragically in a bicycle accident on Wednesday, April 27, 2005. Mr. Wilcox was born in Lyndhurst, OH, on October 26, 1955. Gregory had lived with his mother in Candler for the past year and a half to help care for his father, Wayne Nelson Wilcox who died of Alzheimer’s on January 2, 2005. Gregory was a good writer who wrote and delivered a poignant eulogy for his father’s funeral at the First Presbyterian Church in Asheville. Gregory graduated from Case-Western Reserve University with a B.S. Degree in computer engineering and a Master’s Degree in electrical engineering from George Mason University. He was an officer in the Blue Ridge bicycle Club, a member of Negative Population Growth and Population Connection. Gregory was keenly interested in preserving the environment. He advocated using cars as little as possible and eating a vegetarian diet, among other things, to help preserve the environment. He was a self taught musician and recently sold his percussion instruments from when he had a rock band as a young man. He was good in computer instruction and was more than willing to help others in learning how to operate computers. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Garrison Wilcox and his younger brother Keith, who resides in Abingdon, VA. Alan Wilcox is Gregory’s uncle and Jeanette Foot is his aunt on his father’s side. The uncles and aunts on his mother’s side are Arnold and Naomi Garrison, Ben and Judy Garrison, Lowell and Ruby Garrison and Norman and Tabitha Garrison. Bob and Fannie Westfall and Helen Simpson are Gregory’s mother’s sisters and brothers-in-law. There are also numerous nieces and nephews. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed. Dr. Albert G. “Pete” Peery, pastor, will officiate at a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the Campbell Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 40 Church Street, Asheville. The family will receive friends following the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to one’s favorite charity.

  1. When I moved to Candler, NC in March of 2003 I was already into mountain biking. However, the mountain roads of western NC enticed me into getting a road bike. Shortly after I got my first road bike I left my home in Candler on my first road ride ever in the area. I was uncertain about a lot of things being on the road for first time. Towards the end of my ride at the corner of Queen and Enka Lake Rd, I had my very first encounter with a fellow road cyclist. It was Greg who I met that day in April 2003. He gave me encouragement about being on the road and described the great riding opportunities near Candler. Greg was the first ‘spoke’ in my ‘wheel of confidence’ for being safe on the road. We established email communications after that and I learned Greg was always very supportive of my cycling ideas about the BRBC. I will miss his presence as the BRBC webmaster.

  2. Greg was a gentle person with passion. He was one of the cogs in the workings of the Blue Ridge Bike Club working behind the scenes. His computer skills enriched the club’s web site. His attention to details and dedication was much appreciated. He will truely be missed by us all. I appreciate having had the opportunity to share some of my life with Greg. I would like his family to know we care and share in their loss.

  6. We were truly touched by this loss to our community. But as tragic as this is, Greg was doing what he loves — riding his bicycle in the morning mountain air. How fragile life is and how difficult to remember. Blessings upon his family.

  12. I was shocked and saddened to learn of Greg’s passing. Most of my memories of him are from my early childhood. I remember the whole family visiting us in Colorado. We loved having our cousins here. I am sorry not to have gotten to know him as an adult. My heart goes out to my dear Aunt Ruth. I love you and Keith. Love, Your niece, Jane
