It is with great sadness that the family of Greg Stiles announces his passing on Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 at the age of 51 in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Born on April 13th, 1966 in Montgomery, Alabama to Robin and Tom Stiles, Greg grew up in many places around the world including Germany, Alaska, and Florida. He lived his adventurous and full life in Pennsylvania, Colorado and North Carolina with his wife of 24 years and best friend Courtney (McVey) Stiles. He was most proud of their three children; Vance (18) a first year student at UNC Chapel Hill, Chloe (16) a Junior at Owen High School and Parker (13) an 8th grade student at The Learning Community. Greg held a degree in civil engineering from UNC Charlotte. Bridge design was truly his art and passion and he was very proud to be employed as a Chief Project Manager at the firm of COWI Bridge Design, based in Vancouver, British Colombia Canada. He served for Engineers Without Borders and visited many middle schools sharing his passion and teaching them the elements of bridge design and building through a hands-on experience. In his spare time he enjoyed travel and outdoor pursuits with his family spending many days hiking mountain tops, paddle boarding, experiencing and appreciating the best that life could offer. An athlete with a presence that could not be missed, Greg enjoyed running and competing in sprint triathlons. He was also an avid rugby player and held the friendships he gained on the field very dear. Greg was truly loved by the community of Black Mountain and served as a Deacon at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church. He was an advocate of the Black Mountain Greenways development program and volunteered his time as a planner. Greg is also survived by his parents, his brother Tommy Stiles, of Richmond, VA and his wife Leigh Stiles; his in-laws Gayle & Michael Fedigan of Newburgh, NY and Vera & David McVey of New York City as well as his many loving cousins, nieces, and other friends. There will be a celebration of Greg’s life on Saturday, September 23rd at 2pm at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, 117 Montreat Road, Black Mountain, NC. Immediately following there will be a time of visitation at the church. Memorial donations may be made in Greg’s name through Eblen Charities at https://www.eblencharities.org/donations/ 50 Westgate Parkway, Asheville, NC 28806. 4. Truly sorry to hear about Greg’s passing. I worked with Greg in Engineers Without Borders and through projects with the City of Asheville. Greg was generous with his time, even letting me know about potential job openings when I was temporarily unemployed during the late 2000’s downturn – he called me a few times without me asking for his help, letting me know about positions he’d heard about. He also called me about Engineers Without Borders’ overseas trips he thought I’d be interested in, just because he thought I’d be interested in helping out.

Greg was a fine man and great to work with. I’m sorry for his loss, and wish his friends and family comfort in this sad time.

    • This is the sweet Greg I remember, always caring and helping others. I was a HS classmate, he was always a pleasure to be with!

  5. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Gregory. Jesus Christ came as a spokesman for his loving Heavenly Father Jehovah. During his ministry he healed some of the sick from whatever illnesses that they had. He also brought back to life some of the people that had fallen asleep in death one of them was his friend Lazarus that had been dead for four days John Chapter 11. This foreshadowed what Jesus Christ will do in the very near future right here on a brand new Paradise Earth no more sickness pain or death Life Without End Revelation 21:1-5.

  21. Greg and I were roommates at UNCC for a couple of semesters.
We went on a ski trip to Colorado together. Though we lost touch he was often remembered for his very cool manner and lighthearted sense of humor. Though he was younger than I, I looked up to him as he was larger and smarter.
I’m glad to have been his friend and truly mourn for his loved ones.

  22. I am so sorry to find that Greg passed. I worked with Greg at American Engineers in Raleigh NC. It was a joy to work with him.
