Grover William Penland, 87, of 243 Starnes Cove Road, Asheville, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at his home. Mr. Penland was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Lloyd and Maude Holcombe Penland. He was also preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Mary, Luna, Paul, Dick Penland and Josie Murray. He was a former employee of American Enka and was a retired antique and furniture dealer. He is survived by his wife, Willie Merrell Penland; one son, Johnny Penland and his wife Ann of Asheville; two grandchildren, Kathy Buckner and her husband Mike and Beth Tuten and her husband Tommy; four great-grandchildren, John and Laura Buckner and Jared and Mary Tuten; and two sisters, Hazel Burrell and her husband Clarence and Lee Fadden and her husband Wayne. Graveside services will be at 11:00 am Thursday at Oak Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Kim Higgins and Enoch Ball officiating. His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and request that memorials be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to Oak Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 277 Oak Hill Road, Candler, NC 28715.
