Harlon Lee Barnes, 90, of 7 Wedgefield Place, Asheville, died Sunday, January 27, 2002, in an Asheville hospital. Mr. Barnes was born in Murray County, GA, and was a son of the late Daniel W. and Margaret Ferguson Barnes. He was married to Margaret Crook Barnes who died in 1977. He was retired from American Enka and was a member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Ruth Fender with whom he made his home for 3 years; one son, Edward Barnes of Candler; one sister, Beatrice Rogers of Asheville; three half-sisters, Marie Corn of Waynesville, Addie Jarvis of Weaverville, and Linda Calloway of Asheville; two half-brothers, Dan Barnes of Hendersonville and Thomas N. Barnes of Macon, Georgia; nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm Thursday at Pisgah View Memorial Park with the Rev. Charlie Sams officiating. His family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ones favorite charity or to Eliada Home for Children, PO Box 16708, Asheville, NC 28816.

  1. I believe his daddy was Woodard Barnes and he had a brother named Arthur. They often visited my great aunt who lived at 52 Virginia Ave.during the 1940s. One time Harlon was making cane syrup and invided me to come and watch.My grand-mother was Vandora Barnes and married William Elijah ( Will ) Barnes.My great-grandfather was preaching on the square in Asheville when he was over 100 years old,He was William Newton Barnes 1812-1916.I have a geneolgy record on my computer and need more information if you please.
