Fletcher ~ Harold Edwin Lawing, 73, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 10, 2003.
A native of Buncombe County, Mr. Lawing was a son of the late James E. and Allie Bishop Lawing, was husband of the late Jane Whitaker Lawing, who died December 2, 2002 and was also preceded in death by a sister Leila Davis and a brother, Ernest Lawing.
Mr. Lawing was a member of Trinity of Fairview and retired in 1989 from Cranston Print Works, where he had worked as a shift superintendent with 37 years of service. At the same time, he worked and farmed an apple orchard. He helped work on the tunnel construction on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1948 and was a US Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
Survivors include six children, Sandra Fisher, and her husband Bill, of Fletcher, Mack Lawing of Asheville, Joan Thompson, and her husband Clyde, of Elkins, West Virginia, Pamela Russell of Arden, Robin Lawing of Mills River and Janet Byas, and her husband Jeff, of Arden; two sisters, Eileen Jenkins of Elkin, NC and Doris Brookshire of Waynesville and fourteen grandchildren, Lynn Fisher, Chris Lawing, Jennifer Lawing, James Thompson, and his wife Amy, Kristen Fisher, Jane Thompson, Ryan Lawing, Audrey Russell, Cameron Lawing, and his wife Gloria, Alisha Russell, Nathan Lawing, Allison Russell, Jessica Thompson and Austin Byas.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 AM at Trinity of Fairview with the Rev. Steve Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Tweed’s Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be sons, Mack and Robin Lawing, sons-in-law, Bill Fisher, Clyde Thompson and Jeff Byas and a nephew, Robert Kilpatrick.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road where Mr. Lawing will remain until being placed in the church 30 minutes prior to his service.
