Harold L. Meadows, 92, World War II Veteran, entered into his heavenly home January 14, 2020.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Colleen Meadows, a son, Harold Eugene Meadows, his brothers, Wade L. Meadows and Don Meadows, a young brother, Wayne, and sisters Juanita Sharpe and Catherine Meadows. He is the son of the late Samuel Meadows and Florence H. Meadows.

Surviving are his son, Larry R. Meadows; daughters, Darlene M. Vaillancourt (Bob) and Betty M. Fair (Mark); daughter-in-law, Nancy H. Meadows; brother-in-law, McKinley Sharp; nine grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters Betty M. Sharpe, Carolyn M. Radcliff, and brothers Kyle Meadows (Cheryl), Owen Meadows, and Floyd Meadows (Sandy).

Harold retired from Sears and Company, and became a small grocery owner of Erwin Hills Grocery. He was gifted with knowledge of small engines, repairing lawn equipment, etc. for friends and for the community. He loved his antique autos and holds a first place trophy champion of his 31 Ford. He showed several other antique autos and belonged to the local Antique Auto Club. He restored several over the years, and traveled to many auto exhibitions.

He is a lifelong member of Georgetown Baptist Church.

The family expresses special gratitude to his special friends, Jack Briggs who visited him weekly, David Herron who delivered meals twice weekly, and to Jan Wilson.

A receiving for friends and family will be held on Monday, January 20, at the Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Private burial with military honors for family and friends will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, at the Western Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain. The Rev. Jacob Ellege and David Rogers will preside.

Flowers are welcome; however, donations may be made to Georgetown Baptist Church, PO Box 448, Leicester, NC 28748, or to Victory Baptist Church Meals for the Homebound, 80 Olivette Rd., Asheville, NC 28804.

  6. Uncle Harold was a great man. I remember visiting him at the store where he and Daddy would talk for hours. I am sure there is a great reunion going on in Heaven.

  12. We extend our sympathy to his family. He was a great friend. He kept my lawnmower running and we shared good A Model times. When I would visit in the spring he would give me a bunch of ramps! He and Colleen always made me feel at home. He will be missed, but I have lasting memories.
