Harrison Lee "Smitty" Smith Sr. Arden ~ Harrison Lee "Smitty" Smith Sr., 78, of Arden, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at his residence. A native of Bath, ME, he was a son of the late Harry Smith and Marion Smith Goding. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruthe Smith, who died in 2009. Harrison retired from the United States Air Force, serving in Korea and Vietnam. He also retired from the US Postal Service after 22 years of service. He is survived by one daughter, Eva Wilson and her husband, Dennis, of Putney, VT; two sons, Harrison L. Smith Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Fairview and Jay Smith and his wife, Jessica, of Arden; one sister, Polly Long of Camden, ME; two brothers, Leonard Smith of Richmond, ME and Alfred Smith of Rockland, ME; five grandchildren, Jordan, Jayson, Juliet, Katie and Amy; two great-grandchildren, Lea and Peter as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. A Life Celebration Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 26, 2012 in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Pastor Bill Keel officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family graciously asks to please consider memorial contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project at 4200 Morganton Rd, Ste 300, Fayetteville, NC 28314 or at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

  1. I am so sorry hear the sad news of Uncle Smitty! Praying for Butch, Jay, Diane, Jessica and the rest of the family. I know this is a very difficult time for all of you.   4. Dear Smith Family – I was so sorry to here of Smitty’s death. Although I had not seen him in a while due to my job change, I have often thought with great affection and pleasure of our wonderful visits in my office. He would always let me know of his great love for his wife and how much he missed her. The world has lost a great man and he will truly be missed.
    Please accept my sympathy on your loss.

  5. So sorry to hear about Mr. Harrison’s passing. I work at K-mart on Brevard Rd in the pharmacy, and every time he was in the store he was sure to come by and say hello. Will certainly miss him. May God bless your family.

  6. Dear Smith Family, I was so shocked when the word was given to us in produce of Smitty’s passing. I had seen him earlier in the week as he come through the market. Of all times Smitty didn’t come over to the the counter and speak. I am sure He realized we were very busy. Smitty will be missed at Ingles on Long Shoals as was Mrs. Smith when she passed. We love you guys and our heart goes out to your entire family.

  9. I worked many years ago with Smitty at the post office on Brevard Road. It has been several years since I had seen him but I enjoyed working with him. He was very nice and helpful when I was first starting my career at the post office 23 years ago. I also appreciate his service to his country. My prayers are with your family.
