Hattie Velma Smith, 94, of Dogwood Rd., Candler, died on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. A native of Buncombe Co., Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Lang and Etta McElrath Rich. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dallas H. Smith, who died in 1982; sister, Demia Gevedon; and brothers, Arthur, Homer, and Avery Rich. Mrs. Smith was a member of Pole Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Sluder; sons, Jack Smith and wife Judy, Larry Smith and wife Elizabeth, and Garry Smith; daughter-in-law, Ann Smith; brother, Lloyd Rich; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and sixo great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Revs. Dennis Thurman and Virgil Holloway officiating. Interment will follow at Hice Hill Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

  6. Aunt Hattie, you were always someone special in my life as I came into the Rich/Gevedon family at the age of 16. You and Uncle Dallas just loved me into your family and that meant so much to me. I will miss you dearly, but your memories will always bring a smile to my face. Thank you for loving me just the way I am.
