Asheville~ Helen DeVault died on April 3rd, 2009, at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville.
She was born in 1913 in Ishpeming Michigan, the daughter of the late Agda and Karl Mantyla. The family moved to Detroit in the 1920's, where Helen graduated from Wayne State University. She married Warren DeVault in 1938. They lived in the Detroit area for many years, and Helen taught in the Van Dyke Public Schools until her retirement in 1973. Her loving husband passed away in 1994 in Clearwater, Florida. In 1999, Helen moved to Deerfield, where she lived until her death.
She is survived by her sister Ruth Lawrence of Asheville, niece Carol Lawrence of Asheville; niece Marsha Taylor of Ashland, Missouri; nephew Karl Mantyla, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan; and several grand nieces and nephews.
A private burial was held in Florida. A memorial service for Helen will be held on Saturday, April 18th, at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Giles Chapel of Deerfield.
Memorials may be made to the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community Residency Fund. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
