Helen Louise Nelson Alexander, 98, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at her home at Crescent View Retirement Center, Asheville. Mrs. Alexander was born in Transylvania County and was a daughter of the late George Washington and Callie McGaha Nelson. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Herbert K. Alexander who died in 1970, and Jasper Allen Alexander in 1991, and two sons, Kenneth and Frank Alexander. She was the oldest member of Grace Baptist Church, Asheville. Surviving are one son, Albert G. Alexander and his wife Virginia of Hendersonville; three step-daughters, Lois Woody and Martha Hungerford of Asheville and Brenda Arey of Charlotte; one step-son J. Bruce Alexander of Stroudsburg, PA; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Alexander of Hendersonville; one sister Viola Galloway of Brevard; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. L. Wayne Adkisson officiating. Burial will be at Ashelawn Gardens Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to Grace Baptist Church, 718 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
