Henry Elick Johnson, 81, died Thursday, March 3, 2022, at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late David and Etta Grindstaff Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Joanne Totten Johnson; daughter, Vera Bartlett; six sisters, and eight brothers.

Mr. Johnson loved all his family deeply and is survived by his children, Cheryl Heise and husband Ben, Charles Johnson and wife Briana, and Carmen Cordell and husband David; son-in-law, Darrell Bartlett; adopted children, Deegii and Gaama; eight grandchildren: Benjamin, Mallory, Jada, Alex, Jared, Heather, Ryan, and Gracie; great-grandchildren, Zoee, Charlotte, Carter, Henry, Sophia, Maggie, Sam, Sutton, Shea and Amina, and a number of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dog, BJ whom he loved dearly.

The funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Pole Creek Baptist Church. Pastor Benjamin E. Heise, IV, his grandson, will officiate. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

His family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pole Creek Baptist Church Missions Fund.

  1. Uncle Henry & Aunt Joe, who i loved dearly they we’re there when i needed them sometimes as a parents they helped me to be the person i have become. Love you both.

  2. We never got the pleasure of meeting this man. We heard so many wonderful things about him from his grand daughter, Alex and our son, Will. Our family sends our love and prayers. Alex, we are so sorry for your loss. Your Paw paw is in Heaven happy to be with his wife and in no more pain. Alex, we love you and we’re here for you.

  3. My fondest memories were coming up for weekends and sometimes weeks at a time to visit Uncle Henry and Joanne as a kid. I loved his monkey faces he would make! Praying for all the family during this difficult time. There will never be another Uncle Henry ❤️❤️❤️

  4. I loved Uncle Henry so much. He was so kind and giving of himself. He was my favorite Uncle. I always loved visiting him and Aunt Joanne as a kid and getting to play with my cousin’s.I have very fond memories of him and Joanne. My prayers are with you all. I love you guy’s.

  5. May the Lord bless you all in this time of Henry’s passing. He was like a Dad to me growing up. As he kept us all in check when we got into trouble.
