MILLS RIVER, NC – Henry G. Hoffmeyer, 90, of Mills River, NC, passed away at his home on Thursday, January 4, 2024, surrounded by loving family members.

A Memorial Service will be at noon on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Pisgah United Methodist Church in Florence, SC, with Pastor Chad Nelson presiding. A visitation will be held beforehand at 11a.m. at the church.

Henry will be remembered for many things. Devoted to his family, he was a longtime Southern Bell/Bellsouth employee and a diehard Clemson fan. His motto was that if he joined an organization, he hoped to leave it in better shape than he found it. In 1993, Henry retired from the telecommunications industry after 39 years with the same company. He spent the next few years with his wife traveling around the U.S., Canada, Europe and Israel, as well as trips to Dublin, Ireland to visit with his eldest daughter and family. Other constants in his life were serving as an officer on the Coastal Council of Boy Scouts (and eating a lot of popcorn) and was a member of the St. Andrews Rotary Club in Charleston and the Four Seasons Rotary Club in Hendersonville, NC. He was also president of the Homeowners Association of the Ashley House in Charleston and worked to make major renovations to the building.

Henry was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Mary Belle (Polly) DeWitt Hoffmeyer and two of his siblings, Lucy Rhame and Conrad Hoffmeyer. Surviving are three daughters, Gayle (Alan) Baird, Judy Longshaw and Suzanne O’Donnell; siblings, Peggy Gause and Scott Hoffmeyer; grandchildren Kenneth (Kate) Longshaw, Alastair Baird, Mary (Jose) Campos, Andrew Baird, Elizabeth O’Donnell, Lauren Baird and Natalie O’Donnell; and a host of nieces and nephews. Also, a very special thank you to his caregivers, Crystal, Sandy, Paula, and Kretesha.

One of Henry’s greatest legacies that gave him much happiness was the creation of the Henry and Polly Hoffmeyer Nursing Scholarship at Clemson. He realized the power of education and the responsibility to provide for the next generation. In place of flowers, please donate to the
Hoffmeyer Scholarship Fund at CU Foundation (Fund B3950), P.O. Box 1889, Clemson, SC, 29633.
