Henry Lewis Lance, Jr.

henry lance, jr.
Henry Lewis Lance, Jr, of Enka, passed away early Wednesday morning, February 4th, 2015. He was born in Buncombe County, and lived most of his life in North Carolina. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Henry and Nola Lance, and sisters Ruth Treadway and Jo Anne Miller. He is survived by wife Doolaree, sister Norma Gaston and husband Sonny (Buck) of Asheville, sister Erma Penland of Asheville, son Lewis and wife Christa of Asheville, son Daryl and wife Angela of Salisbury, daughter Diane and husband Bill of Danville, CA, daughter Darlene and husband Thomas of Marietta, GA, ten grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Lewis grew up in Reeves Cove and attended Sand Hill High. Early on, he had a curiosity for 'what made things work' and made a habit out of disassembling and rebuilding everything. After serving his country in the US Navy, he began work as long haul tractor trailer driver. Driving and dealing with broken down trucks helped him find a path in fixing things for a living. Before long, he learned how to maintain and repair engines, weld, wire electrical, plumb, and construct. For over 30 years, he worked for the Slosman Corporation, overseeing the maintenance department. He then spent 18 years with National Wiper Alliance, also in Plant Maintenance. He held a recreational pilots license for years, and enjoyed flying throughout Western North Carolina. Friends and family knew Lewis as a quiet, gentle, loving man who believed in a hard day's work, a man who was always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need, and who they would call first if they needed help fixing or repairing something. He enjoyed time on the water and every form of fishing, and could care less if he caught anything. If you asked him, though, what he enjoyed most, it was time spent with his grandkids. His grandkids loved him, adored him, and looked forward to being around him. We all loved Lewis, and miss him already. Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would rather have donations made to Greg Lentz Ministries in his honor. The address is Greg Lentz Ministry, P.O. Box 2381, Salisbury NC 28145.
