After a brief time managing an Episcopal conference center in south Georgia, he returned to his home town of Asheville, NC and began his second long career, this time in hospital management at St. Joseph and Memorial Mission Hospitals. During his final years, he split his time between the mountains and the sea, enjoying his winter months at St. Simon's Island, GA.

I think of both Herman and Jane with such fondness. Herman volunteered at Mission Hospital from June of 1988 until March of 2000. Contributing 5000 hours of service. He served at Patient Discharge Escort and at the Information Desk on the Memorial Campus and always had a smile and quick wit. During our slow times, he would regale us with stories of his time as a drill instructor and I can still see those stories come to life in my mind. Our thoughts are with you during this time of loss and we hope that fond memories will be a comfort to you in the days ahead.

Abby Bates ( daughter of Mary & Paul – the Asheville School )
A long life well lived! We will miss Herman’s twinkle and feel grateful for the wonderful family he leaves behind. All our love.
Learned to know and love Herman and Jane after joining the St. Joseph’s Hospital team in 1968. Shared experiences at work, when playing bluegrass music, and when enjoying his participation at Buel’s Board Meetings, dinners, shindigs and as Corporate Secretary!
Good Man…
Loved and missed
Herman and Jane were friends of my parents Howard and Lucia Ruckman. I am so sorry to hear of Herman’s passing.
