Hilda Smith Metcalf, 85, went to be with her Lord Saturday, November 19, 2016. Born in Madison County, she was a lifelong resident of Buncombe. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gershon Smith and Myrtle Fox Smith, her husband of 41 years, J.C. Metcalf, Jr., her son, James Harding Metcalf, and 12 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children, John David Metcalf (Lena) of Iva, SC, Rebecca Metcalf Payne (Jim), Earl Jay Metcalf (Elaine) and Eric Gregg Metcalf (Debbie), all of Asheville; daughter-in-law Linda Metcalf; brother, Howell Smith (Mary Jo) of Weaverille; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many much loved nieces and nephews. Mrs. Metcalf was a member of Grassy Branch Baptist Church and retired as a baker from the Buncombe County Schools, especially, Haw Creek Elementary. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grassy Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Ken Sausedo and Stanley Peek officiating. Interment will follow at Gashes Creek Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday one hour prior to the service and at other times the family will be at her son Earl's home, 44 Oak Hollow Drive, Asheville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Eliada Home, or CarePartners Hospice. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She kept her family centered by example. She was loved by all who knew her. Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Rd. is assisting the family.
