Asheville – Hilda Stoker Griffin, 87, of Hilltop Road, died Monday, April 6, 2009, in the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.
A native of Salisbury, NC, she was the daughter of the late Wiley Alexander and Sallie Mae Snider Stoker. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William Ray Griffin, Jr., M.D., who died in 2002 and her brother, Richard Wiley Stoker.
Mrs. Griffin was a member of Central United Methodist Church, a long time volunteer in the Mission Hospital gift shop, a member of the Junior League of Asheville, the Children's Welfare League and a past president and treasurer of the Town and Country Garden Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen G. Tinsley and husband, Steven L. Tinsley, of Charlotte; son, William R. "Bill" Griffin, III and wife, Alice Ward Griffin, of Asheville; sister, Beryl S. Brown of Erwin, Tennessee and sister-in-law, Jane Fogus Stoker of Charlotte. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Kimberly Lynne Tinsley Riddle and her husband, Paul, Lee Griffin Tinsley, Ashley Griffin Wineinger and William Ward Griffin and his wife, Melanie and four great grandchildren, James Steven Riddle, William Cole Wineinger, Hannah Kate Wineinger and William Ward Griffin, Jr.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road conducted by the Rev. Rob Blackburn. Interment will follow in Calvary Churchyard.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday at the son's residence, 23 Hampstead Road.
