Homer Gene Edwards, 85, of Asheville, died Wednesday, September 2, 2015. Born January 31, 1930 in Buncombe Co., he was a son of the late Homer Edwards and Madeline Tow Edwards. He was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Susan Edwards, brother, Ray Edwards, sister, Edith Ledbetter, and grandson, Dennis "Richard" Edwards II. Mr. Edwards served in the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army. He was an active member in the VFW Post 891, and was VFW State Commander in 1998/99. He received the Long Leaf Pine award from Governor James Hunt in 1998, and served as Chairman of the Buncombe County Council for Veteran's in 1982. He was a volunteer at the Charles George Veteran Hospital where he was instrumental in having church services orchestrated into each patients rooms from the chapel service. He also helped to organize the veteran's cemetery located in Black Mountain. He was a member of the M.O.C. and Disabled Veterans organization. Mr. Edwards retired as a floor installer. He was an avid Nascar fan, and enjoyed being with his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris Jones Edwards; daughter, Brenda Edwards Ball and husband Danny; son, Dennis Richard Edwards; granddaughters, Misty Ball Wyatt and husband Steven, Christy Ball Bowens and husband Bruce, and Karla Edwards (the late Richard); great-grandchildren, Trever and Austin Bowens, and Chloe and Colby Wyatt; sister Betty Johnson; and several special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Groce Funeral Home, Patton Ave., with the Rev. Randy Burrell officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by the Buncombe County Veteran's Council. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 til 3:30 p.m. on Saturday prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Laurel Fork Baptist Church, 3021 Bailey Branch Rd., Marshall, NC 28753, or to CarePartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
