He was the son of Horace P. Hughey, Sr. and Velva McCain Hughey, who ran Hughey's Market on College Street in Asheville, NC, in the first half of the 20th century. He grew up in the family business and learned the butcher trade from his father. He joined Swift and Company in 1945, rising from meat-cutter to salesman to plant manager and retired in 1983, having been transferred to Raleigh, Kannapolis, and back to Asheville. He and Mrs. Hughey were life-long members of Haywood Street United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Masons.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Katherine Hughey Schoettger of Orlando, FL; two sons and their families, Mr. & Mrs. Michael Hughey of Arden, NC, Mr. Patrick Hughey of Staunton, VA; three grandchildren: Dr. & Mrs. Matthew Hughey of Starkville, MS, Ms. Erin Hughey-Commers of Charlottesville, VA, and Mr. Noah Hughey-Commers of Faber, VA.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
We knew Mr. Hughey when he was at the Summit with Mrs. Barnwell. We missed him after he left there, wondered how he was doing. Now, like mama, he is in Heaven and enjoying eternal life. God Bless and comfort you during these time. Linda & Tom
I grew up in Haywood St.UMC & Horace (little round man) was always making everyone laugh, no matter what. I’ve not seen him in years, but have thought about him quiet often. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, I hope now your family gets comfort through God knowing Horace is in Heaven with other loved ones. I know he will be missed, but never forgotten. God be with you all.
Horace and Marguerite were next door neighbors to the Sisk family when Mike and Pat were small boys. I think we became each others’ externded families, largely because of my mom who loved them all very much. So many precious memories lodged in our hearts…. I pray for Horace, and for us all, a safe journey and sweet reunions both here, and hereafter, with love, Betty
Horace was a wonderful neighbor. He and Marguerite treated me as family and were always warm and giving of themselves. Horace was a very skilled and talented craftsman who had the patience to show an inquisitive kid how things were done;always shipshape and squared-away.
Michael you have my deepest sympathy and prayers.
