Howard William McCain, 85, of 146 West Oak View Rd., Asheville, died Thursday, March 15, 2007, at the VA Medical Center. A native of Buncombe Co., Mr. McCain was a son of the late Andrew and Verdie Everhart McCain. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Mae Presnell McCain, who died in 1998. Mr. McCain graduated from Sand Hill High School. He was owner and operator of JKP Tractor Service for 21 years, and retired from Ferguson Implement Co. after 10 years. Mr. McCain was a veteran of the US Army, serving in WWII. He was very active at Reeves Chapel United Methodist Church, where he had served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Board of Trustees. Mr. McCain is survived by his daughter, Peggy Sims and husband Don; sons, Jerry McCain and wife Brenda, and Kenneth McCain and wife Gwen, all of Asheville; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Rev. Phillip Hurst officiating. Interment will follow at Reeves Chapel UMC Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Reeves Chapel UMC, 225 Sardis Rd., Asheville, NC 28806.
