Hugh A. Messer, 77, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012. Hugh was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County and the son of the late Hugh and Mildred Lunsford Messer. He was a retired engineer with 42 years service with American Enka and BASF. He worked as a volunteer with the IRS Tax Return Program and was an election poll worker. Hugh is survived by his wife, Norma J. Messer; a daughter, Pam Neumeyer of Dillon, Montana; two sons, Doug Messer of Atlanta and Greg Messer and his wife, Michelle, of Wilmington, NC. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Skyler Neumeyer, Samuel Messer and Sydney Messer; a brother, David Messer and his wife, Shirley, of Asheville and nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the Intensive Care Unit of Mission Hospital, Memorial Campus, for their loving care. The Celebration of Hugh's Life will be held at 11:00 am Saturday in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road conducted by the Reverend Bill Snyder. The family will receive friends following the service.

  1. I remember meeting Hugh several years ago and one thing that struck me immediately was his sense of humor, congeniality and love of Tennessee football. I am sorry that I lost touch with both Norma and Hugh over the years, but both have special memories for me and I remember Hugh fondly as a man of warmth and grace. My condolences to Norma and Hugh’s family.

    Hugh experienced the joy and miracle of a long, fulfiling life on this amazing planet, and that is pretty much all any of us could ever ask for.

  18. Norma, we were so sorry to read Hugh’s obit the day Jerry got out of Mission. Would have come to speak to you had I known Hugh was there. Jerry was in 10 days and I know you must need rest now.
