Hurley Rushen Prestwood, 85, of 263 Hogeye Road, Leicester, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004, in an Asheville hospital. Mr. Prestwood was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Charlie and Sallie Stines Prestwood. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was a retired farmer. He served as an Election Official at the Big Sandy Polls and was a past member of the Big Sandy Community Club. He was a member and choir member of Big Sandy United Methodist Church. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eva Teague Prestwood; one daughter Linda P. Nesbit and her husband John of Asheville; two sons, Terry J. Prestwood and Ronald D. Prestwood and his wife Mary, all of Leicester; seven grandchildren, Brian, Jason, David, Brandon, Jamie, Nicholas and Zachary; one great-grandson Jacob; and one sister Exum P. Ball of Leicester. He was preceded in death by sisters Gurthel Reynolds and Reva Ingle and brothers Morris Prestwood, Dan Prestwood and Revis Prestwood. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Big Sandy United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ed Worley and Ricky Townsend officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and at other times will be at the residence. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Big Sandy United Methodist Church, c/o Judy Jones, 47 Bald Creek Road, Leicester, NC 28748, or to the Leicester Volunteer Fire Dept., PO Box 100, Leicester, NC 28748.

  7. The Sandy Mush 4-H club wanted to say how much we will miss Mr. Prestwood. He was always a joy to see at our annual senior dinners. Our deepest sympathy to your family.

  12. My family and I will always remember
    Hurley Prestwood as being the first
    Prestwood blood relation we knew out
    side of our own California family.
    We knew our family came from Buncombe over 100 years ago.We went
    to Sandy Mush in 1986 and looked up Prestwood and we were given the
    friedliest welcome anyone could ask for by Hurley and Eva Prestwood.My family and I still treasure that meeting and always will.
