Ida McManus Richey, 90, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2013, at the Mountain Ridge Wellness Center, in Black Mountain, following a long illness. Ida, daughter of Ida Tuten Thomas McManus and Joseph Britton McManus, was born on November 27, 1922, in Hampton, SC. She was known to friends as "Mickey," and grew up in Camden, SC, graduating from Camden High School in 1939, and Business College in Columbia, SC, where she was then employed by the Internal Revenue Service.
Mickey married her high school sweetheart, Herbert Lynn Richey, Jr., on July 14, 1944, in Mount Holly, NJ, a few days before his deployment to Europe where he served in the U.S. Army. Following Herb's release from service, the couple settled in Columbia, where Herb began his career as a chemist, and Mickey her career as a homemaker and eventual mother of four.
Over the course of 37 year, her husband's profession also took the family to Savannah, GA; Clinton, IA; and Baton Rouge, LA, where Mickey was soon enthusiastically involved in church and community. An active Presbyterian and an ordained deacon, she served for many years as an officer in the Presbyterian Women organization, continuing to give generously of her time to the church as long as her health allowed. Mickey loved flowers and flower arranging, and was an active member of several garden clubs.
Following Herb's retirement in 1989, the couple moved to the family's long-time vacation home in Montreat, NC. Here Mickey was a valuable member and volunteer of Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, as well as a volunteer for Montreat Conference Center.
Mickey was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Peter Mitchell Richey; her sister, Mary Jo McManus Brown; and, in 2009, her husband of 65 years, Herbery Lynn Richey, Jr. She is survived by a son, H.L. Richey, III, and wife Jennifer, of Montreat; son, Joseph Perrin Richey and wife Bunnie, of Savannah, GA; daughter, Mary Robin Richey and husband Gary Brednich, of Midland, TX; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Bonaventure Cemetery, Greenwich Section, Savannah, GA at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16, 2013.
The family requests that memorial gifts be made to a favorite charity of the donor's choice.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family locally.
I recently read about the loss of your dear loved one. Although we are not acquainted personally please accept my condolences. Psalms 90:10 says ‘in themselves the days of our years are seventy years; and it’s because of special mightiness they are eighty years…’ Amazing! Cherish the memories and the times you shared. May the God of comfort continue to be with you during this difficult time.
