Irene (Rene) Wolf, aged 95, died Friday June 8, 2018. She was born in New York City on February 3, 1923. She was preceded in death by her parents Rose and Harry Lehman, her brother Fred, and her husband of 65 years, Wally. Surviving her are her son, Barry Wolf (Anne Pebley); her daughter, Wendy Bainham (Matthew Elston), and her grandchildren, Samantha Bainham and Rhys Bainham. She was a graduate of New York University and received Masters' degrees from Columbia University and Hofstra University. She greatly enjoyed her work as a reading therapist and guidance counselor. As a counselor she supported girls' access to all academic classes and more equity in girls' sports teams. During the 1970's she was an active member of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and always championed womens' rights. When she and her husband relocated to Asheville in 1994, Rene became a supporter of the Asheville Community Theatre and an active member of the Autumn Players. Among her other interests were literature, art, jazz and politics. There will be a remembrance service for family and friends, to be held shortly. Any donations can be sent to the Four Seasons Hospice online at www.fourseasonsefl.org or by telephone on (828) 692-6178.

  1. What a treasure… Rene will be greatly missed by all who knew her. How I enjoyed listening to her stories…

  2. Was she a guidance counselor in West Islip, NY, in the early 1970s? If so, she was my guidance counselor back then. She was very patient and very cool, and I’m sad to hear she has passed.
