Jack E. Matthews, 65, of 3 Pine Ridge Trail, Arden, died unexpectedly Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at his home.

A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late James Edgar and Amy Moore Matthews, and had lived in Buncombe County for 61 years.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Shook, formerly of Charlotte, and two brothers, Arthur and Jimmie Matthews, both formerly of Asheville.

Mr. Matthews was a 1955 graduate of Berea College, Berea, KY, and served two years in the US Army Administration Center, Far East, Japan, as Assistant Management Officer.  For nine years he worked for Miller Printing Company as Manager/Assistant Treasurer and briefly as Manager of Daniels Graphics Division of Daniels Business, Inc.

In 1969, Mr. Matthews became Staff Accountant at American Enka, Inc.  He served 20 years at Akzona in the Accounting, Comptroller, and Tax Department.  After his retirement in 1989, he became Corporate Tax Manager Consultant for Schwitzer Engine Components North America, where he stayed 10 years.

He was a member of High Vista Country Club and the National Golf Association and a former member of the National Association of Accountants.  He held a Certificate of Membership, Tax Executive Institute, National Tax Executive Institute of North and South Carolina, and served as Corporate Tax Consultant for Tax Executive Institute of North and South Carolina.

Mr. Matthews was a member of Emma United Methodist Church for 40 years and had served as Chairperson of the Administrative Board, Finance, Lay Leader, Church School Teacher, and current Secretary of the Church School.  He was a 1966 nominee of Who's Who in the Methodist Church in America.

He is survived by his wife, Myra (Betty) Young Matthews;  a sister, Elaine Brewer of Charlotte, and many nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Friday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with the Rev. Jim Durham and the Rev. Dr. William Henry Crouch officiating.  Burial will be at Forest Lawn MemorialPark, Enka.

His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Thursday at the funeral home on Long Shoals Road.

Memorials may be made to the Owen Heart Center of Mission/St. Joseph Health Center or to Emma United Methodist Church.
