Fletcher ~ Jack M. Whiteman, 69, of 113 Southbrook Lane, went to be with the Lord Saturday, August 18, 2001, at his residence.

A native of Steubenville, Ohio, he was a son of the late Thomas and Thelma Miller Whiteman and was the husband of the late Nancy Phillips Whiteman who passed away in 1969. He was with the Navy Reserve before joining the US Army. He retired in 1985 as an engineer with Southern Bell with 35 1/2 years of service in Asheville and Miami, Florida. An active member of the Smokey Mountain Harley Owner's Group, he and his wife, Janice, recently completed a 7,202 mile tour throughout the United States on their motorcycle. His hobbies included all types of carpentry.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Janice Nickerson Whiteman; two sons, Mark Whiteman of Candler, David Whiteman and his wife, Shana of Weaverville; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Edwards of Fairview; one brother, William Edward Whiteman of Hialeah, Florida; four grandchildren, Amber, Noah, Steven and Tyler Whiteman and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Skyland United Methodist Church of which he was an active member serving in many capacities. The Revs. Arnie Corriher, Christy Sharp, Harold C. Beaumont and Judy Warner will officiate.

The family will have a reception following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is in charge of arrangements.
