Jack Russell Bennett, 84, of 315 Beaverdam Road, Asheville, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the John F. Keever, Jr. Hospice Solace Center.
Mr. Bennett was a native of Buncombe County and was a son of the late Gola and Marcelle Grimes Bennett. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rita Durner.
Mr. Bennett was a retired Systems Auditor with the U.S. Postal Service. In the 28 years of his retirement, Jack devoted his time to his many hobbies. Among them were collecting stamps and coins, studying and tracking weather, and photography. He also spent his happiest days with his wife gardening and bird watching. He was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Meehan Bennett; four daughters, Mary Morrow and her husband, Mike, of Waxhaw, Tricia Summitt and her husband, Mark, of Carrollton, VA, Betty Abshire of Asheville, and Laurie Wolf of Waxhaw, and ten grandchildren, Nicholas Summitt, Matthew Summitt, Jordan Morrow, Jackson Morrow, Ashley Morrow, Lauren Morrow, Corey Abshire, Amy Abshire, Bennett Wolf, and Madeline Wolf.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. Eugene Catholic Church by the Rev. Fr. John Schneider. Interment will follow at Lewis Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave.

We were saddened to learn of Jack’s death. We go back a long way with Jack; growing up in West Asheville, schoolmates through high school,working at Postal Accounts, and the Postal Service and through it all, good friends. We will miss Jack and extend our sincere condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Jack was always such a nice man. I am sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
Mr. Bennett was such a big part of my childhood memories– all good ones. He will be missed and never forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Pat, Mary, Trish, Laurie, Bob & I are so sorry that we were unaware of Jack’s death. We were at Myrtle Beach for 2 weeks. Please know that you are all in our thoughts & prayers.
