James Carroll Radford, Sr., 84, of Swannanoa, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at his residence. A native of Buncombe Co. he retired from the US Navy after 30 years of service, where he served as Quarter Master QM1 and earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served 22 years in active service and eight years in Reserves. Surviving are four sons, James S. Radford of Asheville, Gary D. Radford of Oakley, Steven W. Radford of Swannanoa and James C. Radford, Jr. of Leicester; two daughters, Denise Inman of Swannanoa and Patricia Camby of Asheville; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two brothers, Coy E. Radford of Oteen and Bobby D. Radford of Enka; one sister, Dale Radford and a special friend, Joan Page. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 22, at 1:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road with Rev. Dr. Jeff Dowdy officiating. Burial will be in the Western State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road. TO OUR DAD: Anchors Aweigh. The endless sea awaits its weary sailor. Now your crew is infinite and your order is but one. No more peril as you sail into the setting sun. Your compass set to the port of souls (where you will wait for us).
