James J. Shroat

Mr. Shroat was born in Biltmore and was a son of the late Arthur P. and Polly Frady Shroat. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Alda C. Shroat who died in 1999, a son, James Arthur Shroat, and three sisters, Hazel McKinney, Harriett Howell, and Alrie Jane (Dinkie) Pace.
He was a Navy veteran of WW II and was a retired Captain with the Asheville Fire Department. He was a member and Past Master of the Biltmore Masonic Lodge and was a fifty-year member of First Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty S. and Pete Webb of Columbia, SC and Donna S. and Eddie Lane of Lexington, NC; six grandchildren, Parker Shroat Webb, Carter B. Webb, Wendi Webb, Penny Henry, Charla Williams, and James Lane; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Lane Henry and Brock Edward Henry; one sister, Katherine Mancilla of San Diego, CA; and one brother, Albert P. Shroat of Asheville.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Gail Coulter officiating.
His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and request that memorials be made to Providence Baptist Congregation, in care of First Baptist Church, 5 Oak Street, Asheville, NC 28801.
