James "J.B." Bass

James "J.B." Bass, 87, of Asheville, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at the VA Medical Center. Born in Buncombe Co., to the late Dewey and Kate McAbee Bass. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Aliene Garrison, and brother, Dewey Bass, Jr. He was a retired truck driver with Smith Farms, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Janie Freeman Bass; sons, Stephen Bass and his wife, Jennifer, of Frankfort, KY, and David Bass and his wife Kim, of Asheville; daughter, Marsha B. Thompson and her husband Charlie, of Asheville; foster-daughter, Kayla Green, of Asheville; and grandson, J.D. Bass and his wife Mariann of Asheboro. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Cane Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Roberts officiating. His family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road.
