James "Jim" Alvin Howell

James Alvin “Jim” Howell, 86, of Candler, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 3, 2023, in Bryson City, NC.

Jim was a devoted family man and Christian. He loved both his “church families” of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church of Candler, and Mt. Vernon Freewill Baptist Church of the Alarka Community of Bryson City, NC.

Jim served in the U.S. Army from August 1955 to July 1957. He proudly served his county while stationed in Korea. Jim worked at BASF, “the Enka Plant,” for 35 years. He also farmed full-time.

He was the son of the late William Howard Howell and Mildred Rogers Howell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Christine Warren Howell, with whom he shared over 50 years of wedded bliss; an infant son, James Calvin Howell; and two brothers, LaFaine and Kenneth Howell.

Jim is survived by two sons, Steven W. Howell (Regina), of Bryson City, and Timothy W. Howell (Wanda), of Greeneville, TN; grandsons, Steven J. Howell (Jenn), of Wilmington, NC, and Justin Howell (Amber) and Grady Howell (Kayla), both of Greeneville, TN; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Letterman and Betty Elliott, both of Candler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Four Seasons Hospice for all their loving care and kindness, as they went above and beyond the call of duty.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave.

Funeral services will be held at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church on Thursday, September 7, at 12:00 p.m., with the Revs. Ty Allen and Chris Nations officiating. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
