James Mood Chapman, Jr. PhD, 72, died Saturday, April 27, 2024, at The Laurels of Salisbury in Salisbury, NC.

Dr. Chapman was born in Charleston, SC to the late James Mood Chapman, Sr. and Leona Catherine Schultze Chapman.

Jim graduated from T.C. Roberson High School in 1969. He received a B.S.in chemistry in 1974 from NC State and received his doctorate in medicinal chemistry in 1984 from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was professor at the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy from 1985 until retiring as professor emeritus in 2020. He received numerous awards including teacher of the year multiple times. Jim was a talented medicinal chemist with many publications and patents; some of which were licensed to pharmaceutical companies. He was also known as a beloved teacher. He was known for his passion of medicinal chemistry, his humor, and concern for student learning.

He is survived by his brother, Steven F. Chapman, M.D. (Michelle); sister-in-law, Elaine Chapman; nephew, Brandon Mooring and nieces Melissa Chapman Spires, Michela Chapman, Lindsay Chapman Castillo, and Shelby Chapman.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 2, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden.

The funeral will be held the next day on Friday at 12:00 pm at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden with Reverend John Trump officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Churchyard in Fletcher.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association. Donations can be made through their website https://act.alz.org
