Born in: Asheville, North Carolina
Resided in: Arden, North Carolina

James (Jimmy) Henry Hall, age 73, of Arden, passed away on January 3, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service that spanned over five decades to his community and a family that loved him deeply.

Jimmy attended Biltmore School growing up and graduated from TC Roberson High School in 1970. Shortly after, he left for the United States Air Force, where he served from 1970-1974, his favorite bases being Germany and Myrtle Beach. In the Spring of 1975, he began working at Aikens Grocery in Skyland, where he would make deliveries in his pickup truck, with the lovely little Lucy riding shotgun. They were wed October 15, 1977, at Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher. They were blessed with 47 years of marriage, despite their dear friends (and Lucy’s brother) accidentally catching their car on fire with a smoke bomb as they left for their honeymoon.

Jimmy began his lifelong commitment to firefighting at the young age of 18 when he joined the Skyland Fire Department on June 19, 1969. Over the course of 55 ½ years, Jimmy earned the respect of his peers and the community as he rose through the ranks, from a volunteer firefighter to Assistant Chief. His impact on the department was immeasurable, and his legacy within the Skyland Fire Department will forever be a part of its history.

In addition to his volunteer service, Jimmy was hired full-time by the Skyland Fire Department on October 1, 1975, and served with distinction until he transferred to the Asheville Fire Department on July 1, 1988. He spent the remainder of his career at the Asheville Fire Department, retiring on July 1, 2001. Even in retirement, Jimmy remained an active volunteer member of the Skyland Fire Department, continuing to give back to the community he loved.

Jimmy’s service extended beyond firefighting. From 1978 to the early 1990s, he worked for Buncombe County as an Emergency Dispatcher, handling fire, EMS, and law enforcement calls. He also worked for the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, beginning as a Reserve Officer on January 30, 1978, later transferring to Fleet Maintenance. Jimmy retired from the Sheriff’s Office on August 8, 2024 after years of dedicated service. For 14 years, his secondary work was working security at the Haywood St Congregation. With his calm presence and de-escalation tactics, he helped prevent situations that arose from becoming out of hand. He was also on the Arson Task Force, Special Response Team, and was a staple at the Mountain State Fair each year in the command center.

Jimmy was known for his strong work ethic, calmness under pressure, and his deep compassion for those he served. His contributions were not only in times of emergency but in countless quiet acts of service and leadership. His presence will be profoundly missed by his family, colleagues, and the many individuals whose lives he touched.

Jimmy’s family always enjoyed hearing his tales of service, often with pride, while just as often in awe of how they all survived! Nothing beat sitting around the table and hearing “now let me tell you a good one”. These memories, as well as others, will be cherished.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Robert Hall, Sr. and Virginia Mitchell Hall Arthur, as well as his stepfather Hayne C. Arthur. Left to carry the torch and live through his legacy, are his precious wife Lucy Cunliffe Hall; his daughters Jennifer Louella Hall of Asheville and Barbara Hall Simpson (John) of Gastonia, and his pride and joys, grandchildren Marshall Henry, Virginia Catherine, and John Childs Simpson V “Jack” of Gastonia; his brother Harry Robert Hall, Jr and brother-in-law Mark B. Queen, both of Winston-Salem; brother in law, Tink (Shirley); nephew Mike(Sara); niece Amy( Will); great nephews Ben and Jack and a slew of cousins he adored.

We’ll be 10-8 down here, Cracker, you rest easy. We’ll take it from here.

The family will receive friends at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian from 5-7pm on Friday, January 17th. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 18th at Calvary Episcopal Church starting at 2pm, with a reception to follow in the Church’s Parish Hall. The Reverends J Clarkson, Vic Mansfield, and John Simpson will preside. The memorial service will be streamed live via the church website (www.calvaryfletcher.org/videos).

The family would like to greatly thank everyone for their unwavering support over the last year during his health struggle. The doctors and nurses at Advent Health, his physical therapists, and all of those who prayed for us and with us. We love you guys.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. To: Lucy, Jen & Barbara: So sorry for this great loss of such a long-time & good friend. The veil that separates life from death is very thin, with love moving in both ways, with Jimmy living on in our hearts forever.

  2. Jimmy, I know you are with our God now and are not suffering anymore and for that, I am so happy. You will truly be missed so much from your family and many many friends. Love you man…see you again one day. Us cousins will be there to support and help Lucy and the girls whenever it is needed.

  3. I’m so very sorry for your loss! He was a great man and I admired him. The entire community will miss his presence. I will be praying for peace and healing for his family and friends. Heaven welcomed him in.

  4. I worked with Jimmy at the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office for years. He always had a smile and a kind word (even when I bugged him about radios and vehicles). I believe the very best I can ever say about anyone is they are a good person, with kindness in their soul. That was Jimmy. While we worked together, the SO policy was Accountability, Professionalism, Dignity, Integrity and Service….I believe those words were written specifically for Jimmy because he exemplified each one. My prayers are for his sweet family (blood, red and blue) who will miss him dearly.

  5. Cracker, as you were known at the Sheriff’s Office for so many years. You were my best buddy as we were side by side on so many occasions . From programming radios to SRT calls, responding to plane crashes to just prowling (as you liked to say), from mountain fair days to comm center days, from being by my side as I did two final calls, to my bedside after surgery. Cracker you have always had my back. Now you have received your most rewarding promotion of all… to GLORY. You will be missed my dear friend but I’ll see you soon. My love to Lucy, Jennifer and. Barbara.

  6. Jimmy was a friend as part of the Mercy League at Haywood Street Congregation. He loved and respected each person. He was missed after he retired but his goodness lives on in us. Grace and peace be with you.

  7. I first met Jimmy on the apron of the old Skyland FD in the late ’70s. In later years we worked the parade and many night shifts in the mobile command post during searches, fires, etc.. I was always glad to hear his voice on the radio at EOC as he could be counted on to do that important job very well! He was a great person with a big heart and great sense of humor. Lucy and the girls- thank you for sharing Jimmy with so many in Emergency Services touching 6 decades! Be proud of the good work he did in Fire, EMS and Law Enforcement!
Jimmy, thanks for always being there for all of us, no matter what was needed and the time of day or night!. Rest easy my friend, you have earned it.

  8. My thoughts and Prayers go out to Lucy and the family. I first met Jimmy (Cracker) in 1981 when I joined the Skyland Fire Dept as a volunteer. I have many fond memories of working with him and knowing him as a close friend.
2121 will be missed. Rest In Peace sir.

  9. Dearest Jimmy was a kindred soul I met at Haywood Street. He guided and assisted the Mercy League honorably and loving. We had numerous, awesome biscuit conversations (which I consistently supplied him with) and a happy healthy relationship. What a blessed role model he was. My condolences and prayers of comfort to the family. He will forever be in my soul and spirit as a child of God placed in my path.

  10. Worked w Jimmy and Lucy back in the 70s..at Aikens Supermarket..so sorry to hear of his passing..he was always cracking a joke or two..at the store..always a happy enjoyable person to be around..saying prayers for his family ..Gloria Daves

  11. Lucy, Barbara & Jennifer I am so sorry for your loss. Having worked with Ms Lucy the past 2 years, I feel as if I have known all of you a long time. I pray that each of you feel God’s arms wrapped around you as you go through this journey of laying Jimmy to rest.

  13. Growing up in the 50’s, Jimmy, Harry, Blake and I were always together. Same neighborhood, same School, same Church….very close Cousins. Our Mothers, who were sisters went everywhere together. The memories that were made during those times remain with all of us even today. I remember when each one of us were saved and Baptized. Many years have passed since those days, and now one of us has been called into eternity. I smile as I remember those times together, and now I rejoice in the fact that Jimmy is no longer in pain and suffering as he did over his final year. He lived a life of service and he enjoyed every minute of it. Lucy, Jenn, Barbara, John and children, Sharon and I pray for you during this difficult time, that you find peace. You can be proud of the Head of your Family for the life he led. We will all meet Jimmy again one day! God’s blessings!

  14. Jimmy and I met and became friends through Haywood Street. There, Jimmy used his training along with his compassion and his humor to help folks, of all kinds, feel the love. Thank you Jimmy! RIP

  22. I met Jimmy as he was returning from his stint in the military. As a member of Skyland Fire department, Jimmy was there to guide and train the newbies to protect the community. He was always smiling and joking around. You could always depend on Jimmy any time of the day or night to be there backing you up on any call. I’ll miss you, Brother! Lucy and the girls, Jimmy loved you so much!

  23. Good to go Jimmy, thank you for your service. That’s all that matters in life, as you knew. – John Butler (Asheville Fire Dept.).
