James Melvin Carland

Mr. Carland was a native of Buncombe County and was a son of the late John David and Nora Plemmons Carland. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was a former resident of Detroit where he was an accountant with the Cadillac Division of General Motors.
He was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church in Candler, the Southfield, MI, Teubor Masonic Lodge #573, and a lifetime member of the VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Kaska Carland; three daughters, Melanie S. Carland and Janie Carland Barton of Denver, CO, and Melinda S. Carland of Detroit; five sons, David M. Carland of Safety Harbor, FL, James M. Kemp of Columbia, KY, William L. Carland of Ferndale, MI, Jeffrey M. Carland of Delray Beach, FL, and Albert Byers of Delray Beach; two sisters, Maxine Crompton and Martha Roche of Asheville; one brother, Max Carland of Candler; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm Sunday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Bailey officiating. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by the Hominy Lodge No. 491 at Green Hills Cemetery.
His family will receive friends from 7 - 9 pm Saturday at the funeral home and request that memorials be made to the Youth Ministries, Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, PO Box 67, Candler, NC 28715.
