James Ronald “Ronnie” Higgins, Jr., age 64, of Old Fort, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 6, 2024. Ronnie was born in Buncombe County on March 10, 1960 to the late James Ronald Higgins, Sr. and Betty Jo McMinn Higgins.
A lover of the mountains and nature, Ronnie could often be found “hunkered down” in his famous squatting position, taking in a sunset or watching and befriending whatever wildlife might happen by. Not only did he love the mountains, but he also loved the people and their rich history. Known as being extremely knowledgeable and very well-read, Ronnie enjoyed conversations about nature, music, local geography, history, old cars and antiques, the “old ways” and more importantly family. Ronnie loved working with his hands and was last employed as the groundskeeper at the Gateway Museum in Old Fort, a place where his interests, skills, and knowledge could be shared with and seen by others. For several years Ronnie served the youth of Old Fort as a soccer and basketball coach, transporting his teams to practice and games in his then famous “bread wagon” with doors open and Reggae music blaring. Ronnie was a talented artist, writer, outdoorsman, and historian. Those who knew him will undoubtedly miss his caring ways, kind smile and friendly wave.
Preceding Ronnie in death are his father, James Ronald, Sr.; brother-in-law, Jackie Ingle and brother-in-law, Frank Roberts. Surviving family members include his mother, Betty Jo, of Old Fort; sister, Lynne Roberts of Old Fort, sister, Teri Ingle of Asheville, sister, Tina Bowling and spouse Mitch of Kentucky; brother, Jeff Higgins and spouse Linda of Old Fort, brother, Joey Higgins and spouse Rebekah of Old Fort and five nephews and seven nieces who simply adored him and his storytelling. Extended family are too numerous to name, but all who knew him loved him and he loved them in return.

To our beloved family please know we love & care for each of you deeply. Ronnie was a kind & caring person. He learned that from his father & mother along with his sense of family. We remember our last conversation with Ronnie clearly. Dearest Betty Jo & family we speak of you often sharing wonderful memories with the deepest affection for your family. The special memories remain & your love for each other & those memories will be held with deep respect that the Higgins family bestowed to us richly throughout our lives. Ronnie will be very missed but always remembered with a warm smile & a gentle soul. The greatest memories come from me (Deb) becoming a part of this big beautiful family that held great love for each other that only grew stronger over 45 years Roland & I have been married.
