Jane Floyd Pinkerton, 71, of Candler, died Saturday, December 24, 2011.
A native of Swain Co. and Buncombe Co. resident most of her life, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Ferayle Floyd.
Jane received her Baccalaureate and Master Degrees in Education from WCU and was a teacher for Buncombe Co. Schools for 31 years, teaching at Venable and Candler Elementary, and Enka Middle Schools. She was an active member of NAE, NCAE, Buncombe County NCAE, and a certified mentor/evaluator for the educator for the education system. In 1990 she represented Enka Middle School as Social Studies Teacher of the Year, and was the school's nominated Teacher of the Year. In 1992 she was recognized in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Jane was an active member of the American Red Cross for over 25 years, taking great pleasure in teaching swimming lessons, first aid, and CPR for the community and her students in the school system.
Her love of these mountains and the culture was well known and she shared that love with her students and children through stories, music, and dance.
Throughout her teaching career, she wrangled students for both smooth and clogging ("buck") dance teams, providing regular entertainment for local nursing homes and the community; she led these teams to victory in many competitions. She loved working outside, especially in her gardens, and especially loved animals (yes, even snakes), rescuing too many to count over the years.
Jane is survived by her children, Richard Pinkerton and his wife Charemon, and Kim Pinkerton; grandchildren Witt and Lauren Pinkerton, all of Candler.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where she was a member.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue or St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of loss. I fondly remember Mrs Pinkerton being my cheerleading coach (back in the day!)

thoughts and prayers are sent . she was my 6th grade teacher at venable, and what a pleasure it was to have such a wonderful teacher and friend to a student.
I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. She was a wonderful teacher and a sweet person. She shared her wisdom with so many children and she will missed.
I was so sorry to hear about your mom’s death. She was my 5th and 6th grade teacher. I was on her square dance team and those are my fondest memories of elementary school. She was so much fun and she allowed all of her students to have a great time learning.
My favorite teacher! My sixth grade class at Venable was a haven for learning. When I see my children made to memorize facts, I think back to ‘Folk Songs in American History’ where we heard songs composed by people who were living during older times. I think back to Mrs. Pinkerton reading to us with passion. That’s teaching! She taught us respect for each other and a love for learning. I wish I had told her these things and ‘thank you’.
