Alta Jane Forward, 93, of Smokey Road, Asheville, died peacefully at her mountain home, on Monday, June 27, 2011. A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Jane was the daughter of the late William David and Mary Mabel Francoise.  Jane was preceded in her death by her beloved husband of sixty-seven years, Myron Hal Forward, in 2009. Mrs. Forward was a graduate of Western Michigan University with a BS Degree in Education, and from the University of Virginia with a degree in Library Science. Mrs. Forward is survived by sons Mike Forward and wife Sylvia, and Jim Forward and wife Sue; grandchildren Tom Forward and wife Dawn, Kris Forward and wife Bethany, all of Asheville, and Kelly Forward George and husband Nick, of Charleston, SC, and great-grandchildren Carson and Avery.  Aside from her passion for gardening and literature, Jane will always be remembered for her gentle soul and youthful spirit, alongside her steadfast dedication to her husband and family. Jane's departure will leave a lasting imprint on many – rarely did she encounter a soul she would not befriend. "Gracious as sunshine, sweet as dew. Shut in a lily's golden core." Margaret J. Preston A funeral service will be held at 12 pm noon on Thursday, June 30 in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel. Interment will follow in the Veterans Cemetery. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.   3. I hold a special place in my heart for both Hal and Jane. Although I called them ‘uncle’ and ‘aunt’, they both ment a great deal to me and to many others. I will always cherrish the memories of the trips to Virginia and North Carolina with my grandparents, Bill and Jen Corstange.
