Janet Travers, 80, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 30th at the Solace Care Center in Asheville. Born on May 16, 1934 to Leah (Williams) and Richard Kirchner, Jan was one of two children. She attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1955. She earned her Master's Degree in Education from SUNY-Potsdam. She married Tom Travers in 1954 and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. They raised their three children in upstate New York. Jan was a fifth grade teacher in Canton, NY. She loved raising and training Shetland Sheepdogs and enjoyed leading obedience classes, often bringing in her own Shelties to demonstrate. She was active in Groce United Methodist Church and in volunteer activities at Highland Farms in Black Mountain. Jan treasured the annual family reunions that brought together her ever expandingfamily at Myrtle Beach each of the last 19 years. Jan is survived by her beloved husband Tom, their three children, Russ (Carol Lynn MacCurdy), Patty, and Mike (Mary Ellen), seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Leah, and her brother Dick. Visitation will be at 10:30 Saturday the 2nd of August at Groce United Methodist Church in Asheville; the service will begin at 11:00 and will be officiated by Rev. Gerald Davis. An additional visitation and service will be held the same day at Black Mountain's Highland Farms beginning at 1:30. Interment will be at the State Veterans Cemetery in Swannanoa at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road is assisting the family.
