James Edmond “Jimmy” Treadway, 69, of Candler, passed away Friday, November 15, 2019, at Mission Hospital.

Born in Lowell, MA, Jimmy was a son of the late Edmond Judson and Anna Devine Treadway. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dennis P. “Denny” Treadway.

He served in Korea with the US Army and he retired after 39 years with Norfolk-Southern Railway, both as a switchman and conductor.

He was a Mason and a member of Hominy Lodge #491. Jimmy coached little league football (the “Termites”) and he enjoyed fishing and supporting Tar Heel basketball. His passion, though, was playing cards, both locally with friends, at the Moose Lodge in Waynesville and in poker tournaments at Harrah’s Cherokee.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Carolyn Owen Treadway; son Brandon Treadway; sister Sharon Hicks (Doug);sisters-in-law, Marilyn Treadway, Patricia Simmons and Jane Owen; four nieces, a nephew, two great nephews and a great-niece.

Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, November 21, in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Bill Jones and Chaplain Gerry Smith officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

  2. Carolyn I am sorry to hear Jimmy has passed away. Sounds like he followed in his fathers footsteps in many ways. Monroe and I bought the house Jimmy grew up in. There was a chandelier in the den for playing poker. I know it will be hard without him, but may you have all happy memories from now on. God bless you!

    I know all who knew Jimmy will miss him. He was one of the kindest men I’ve ever known….always a big smile! I have always thought so highly of him….as did Gary. Thoughts and prayers for you all to get through such a sad time. My very deepest sympathy and love….
