Joan C. Sawyer, 70, of 27 Evening Shade Drive, Weaverville, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Hospice Solace Center.

Mrs. Sawyer was born in Bronx, NY, and was a daughter of the late Louis and Genevieve H. Oestriech Erler. She was a former resident of Norfolk, VA before moving to Buncombe County in June, 1997. She was an avid quilter and was a member of the Tidewater Quilters Guild and the Asheville and Hendersonville Quilters Guilds.

She is survived by her husband, Carlton E. Sawyer; two sons and daughter-in-laws, Craig A. and Donna Lieder of Asheville and Robert L. and Donna Lieder of Chesapeake, VA; one step-daughter, Terry L. Sevitz and her husband David of Aurora. CO; three granddaughters and one grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 pm Wednesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Canon Augusta Anne Rowe of the Cathedral of All Souls Episcopal officiating.

Her family will receive friends immediately following the service until 7:00 pm and request that memorials be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
