Joan Cobley Fontenot, age 90, of Asheville passed away April 2nd, 2021.

She was born in Pennsylvania on January 26th, 1931 to the late George Cobley and Ruth Cobley. She was a graduate of Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford, Connecticut and worked as registered nurse and nurse manager. Joan spent many years in sunny Florida and Louisiana before making her way to the mountains of WNC and joining the community at Givens Estates. She enjoyed an active life, going on walks, sight-seeing and her favorite ‘aquacise’. Joan was a very creative person who loved painting, making baskets, pottery and needlework. Her love of music led to her participation in many choruses and choirs throughout her life including at Givens Estates and Skyland United Methodist Church where she was an active member. She enjoyed traveling, taking cruises and going camping with her family and friends. During her time in Asheville she became a fan of University of North Carolina Asheville sports and going to events regularly with her companion Jim Brazell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Marion Fontenot; husband, Lawrence Peabody; step-son, Randy Fontenot and sister, Mary Herrell. She is survived by her children, Cynthia Strom, David Strom, Kimberly Mehren, Donna Lawrence, Ed Peabody and Joey Fontenot as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. If desired, friends may make memorial contributions to Four Seasons Hospice at 211 N Main St. Hendersonville. NC 28792, or at fourseasonsfdn.org.
