Joan Sitton

joan sitton

June 14, 1939 ~ July 21, 2024

Born in: Billings, Montana
Resided in: Asheville, North Carolina

Joan Sitton passed peacefully in her sleep on July 21, 2024.

Joan wishes to be remembered as a lover of all learning. She spent forty years teaching in various grammar schools and her students were her pride and joy. Her later years inspired her to relearn Latin, study the Classics, Patristics, and Medieval Philosophy. As she was fond of saying, “the Classics and study of the Church Fathers and Medieval Doctors led me out of social Christianity, with God worshiped at a safe distance, and into the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.”

Joan’s Christianity was best summed up in the traditional Anglican Church through her beloved 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Joan was devoted to her church of St. Michael and All Angels in Arden, North Carolina. She nourished her love of Jesus Christ, and His Church with her passion for the musical masterpieces of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frederick Handel. Joan will be remembered as a good Christian lady, without guile, who always instilled in her students the desire to learn from a heart and soul that had endeavored to discover God’s wisdom and love.

Joan is predeceased by her husband, Howard W. Sitton, III. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden, followed by burial at Calvary Churchyard.

In lieu of flowers, Joan wished that remembrances be made in the form of donations to St. Michael & All Angels Anglican Church, P.O. Box 1321, Arden, NC 28704.

  1. Not mentioned in her obituary is the fact that Joan and Howard were breeders and lovers of Standard Schnauzer dogs. We owned two of their dogs, and I was honored to be their veterinarian for over 20 years in Pacific Grove, California. Two of the most wonderful clients of my 41 years in practice. William F. Cleary, DVM
