Joel Clifford Dockery, Sr.

Joel Clifford Dockery, Sr., 66, of 455 Cowan Cove Road, Asheville, died unexpectedly Wednesday, November 21, 2001.

Mr. Dockery was born in Tellico Plains, TN, and was a son of the late William and Lillian D. Dockery. He had been a truck driver for more than 40 years and most recently worked as an owner/operator for R&R Express.

He is survived by his wife, Dortha Stewart Dockery; five daughters and sons-in-law, Betty D. and Tommy Meadows, Patsy D. and Glenn Smith, Sr., and Trina D. and Luke Smith of Asheville, and Brenda D. and Roger Warren, Sr. and Donna D. and Jeff Warren of Enka; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joel C. and Alice Dockery, Sr., Michael D. and Marie Dockery, and Roger L. and Shirley Dockery of Asheville; two sisters, Priscilla Wall of Roundtop, Montana and Carolyn Dockery of Asheville; two brothers, Burney Ray Dockery of Fairview and Jerry Dockery of Asheville; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Ray Wines, R.L. Rogers and Terry Sprouse officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery. Grandsons will be pallbearers.

His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Thursday at the funeral home.

  2. Papaw Dockery was a person that everyone loved. A big teddy bear. I remember growing up, no matter where I seen him or what he was doing, if I didn’t run to him and give a hug, I knew that I was in trouble. You aren’t really my grandfather but you will alwawys be my papaw..you will be greatly missed. I love you and will see you one sweet day..love~Wendy Leigh
