John Brett Holloman, 49, of Asheville, passed away Friday, December 29, 2017, at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 27, 1968, in Lumberton, NC. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Melissa, of the home; son, Mark Holloman (Hali), of Asheville; daughter, Vanessa Holloman Holt (Michael), of Weaverville; father and step-mother, John and Brenda Holloman, of Weaverville; mother, Phyllis Davis of Archdale, NC; sister, Lori Holloman Roberts (Tony), of N. Myrtle Beach, SC; step-sister, Sharon Teague (Stevie Hughes), of Asheboro, NC; step-brother, Larry Brown, Jr. (Kim), of Trinity, NC; grandson, Levi Holt, granddaughter, Jolene Holloman, and faithful canine companion, Daisy. He pursued his dream of Law Enforcement and graduated from Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1989. Brett loved the town of Woodfin and proudly served it for 27 years. He joined the Woodfin Police Department in 1990 as an officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1995 and Lieutenant in 2002. He served as Chief from 2004-2017. Brett was shot in the line of duty in February 1992, and was given Commendation of Valor in March of the same year. Brett received several awards during his career including Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer, and General BLET instructor. In 2001, he earned his Advanced Certification and was an instructor for AB Tech’s Basic Law Enforcement Training program. Hundreds of officers and deputies passed through the block of instruction he taught, which was fittingly ethics. Brett was named Officer of the Year in 2016. Upon his retirement earlier this year he was awarded the highest honor of Police Chief Emeritrus. Brett was a Godly man and devoted family man who was active in his church and community. He was a member and attended Victory Baptist Church where he previously taught Sunday School, helped in TeamKid, VBS, church projects and was an ordained Deacon. He witnessed to many and inspired many both in person and on the radio. Brett was an avid gardener. He enjoyed sharing his harvest with family and friends. He played baseball (catcher) in his youth and was a lifetime Atlanta Braves fan. He was also a Duke Blue Devils basketball fan. He had an interest in flying and took lessons in his late teens and early twenties - going as far as taking solo flight. He earned his black belt in karate and loved martial arts. He loved being outside, and enjoyed spending time at Lake Waccamaw, NC, with his family. The family would like to thank those who have been involved in Brett’s care over the years, most especially his oncologist of 20 years, Dr. James Radford, the Bone Marrow Transplant unit at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Dr. Brown of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and his bone marrow donor. Brett packed a lot of living and giving in his 49 years. He leaves behind a loving family and a legacy of courage and tenacity in the face of many obstacles. Despite his long and brave battle with cancer, he never let it define who he was. He maintained a positive attitude and his faith never wavered. He taught those who knew him much about living and in the end, much about dying. Visitation will be on Thursday January 4 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Brookstone Church, 90 Griffee Rd., in Weaverville. The funeral will be held on Friday January 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Brookstone Church. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Candler, NC. I’m Free
    Unknown Author

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free,
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard his call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I’ve found that peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
    A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My Life’s been full, I savoured much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch,

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.

  12. Melissa, Mark, Vanessa & families: Praying for you all, that God will give you peace. Remember all the good times you spent with Brett. Talk to him like you talk to God. I talk to my Dad’s picture hanging all the wall all the time. I’m probably crazy doing that. It helps me. We know we’ll see our loved ones one day. Love to all.

  13. How we have followed your post on your sweet husband and yourself. He will be missed by many of us that never met him but know him May the peace of the Lord surround you and family with comforting peace How I would love to come to the service, I have the flu and Bronchitis. How blessings I pray surround each on of you that the peace that comes from it sounds da like harps being played by Angels to comfort your souls. Amen. Psalms 121 always

  14. I pray that in this time of loss, you will feel God’s love much more and that you’ll find your comfort In the presence of the Lord. I pray God pours upon you, His sweet amazing grace and overflow your heart with peace as you live in His embrace. My Thoughts and prayers go out to the family and and the men and women who served beside him protecting us. Brett was a very kind man who would do anything in the world for you and it was an honor knowing him. May God bless you and your family during this time.

  15. Teaching me in 2006 in BLET he was an inspiration to me. He taught me in 2006 during the night course and I had regular contact with him as a reserve Deputy until 2012 until I went full-time for 2 years on patrol and a year as a detective with BCSO. For him to be battling the illness and still showing up at abtech to teach classes to younger people wanting to get into the profession he was very humble and very articulate. The Officers he employed along with two detectives that were very influential in my career we’re a testament to his professional Legacy. From everyone I have talked to over the years he was first and foremost a family man and a child of God. This is a sad day for all of us but I want you to know from the bottom of my heart that this man influenced me and the department beyond measure. God bless the family and everyone who is suffering the pain from this loss. His example should be a testament to all of how to live a life while going through major illnesses and still coming out as a fantastic human being…

  16. May God grant you peace and strength during this time. What a fine man and an inspiration to so many. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.
