John Clarence Byrum, Jr., 81, of Candler, died on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at the Charles George VA Medical Center following a period of declining health over the past several years.
A native of Mecklenburg Co., NC, John was a son of the late John, Sr., and Martha Wilson Byrum. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene and Bob Byrum.
Mr. Byrum served his country for four years in the U.S. Air Force. He then worked as a manufacturers rep for rental equipment for several years before operating his own rental business in Canton, NC.
Mr. Byrum is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda Leaman Byrum; daughters, Sherri Jones and husband Lee, of St. Augustine, FL, and Karen Summers and husband Allen, of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Kaylee Jones, of Atlanta, GA, Matt Jones, of St. Augustine, FL, and Josef, Katherine and Alison Summers, all of Greenville, SC.
A memorial service with military honors is scheduled for 12:00 noon Friday, March 23, 2018, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery..
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Byrum's family asks that memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979, or to one's favorite charity.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.
