Asheville ~ Dr. John G. White of 24 Graystone Road passed away on Friday, November 21, 2003. Dr. White retired from American Enka Corporation in 1976 with 23 years of service to the company. He was the chief translator for American Enka and fluently spoke several languages including English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish and Russian. After his retirement, he traveled abroad extensively with his wife, Louise who preceded him in death in 1993. A native of Austria, Dr. White graduated from Vienna University where he received his Ph.D. in Political Science. He also studied at the Textile School of Vienna in Austria and at Columbia University in New York City. Dr. White came to the United States in 1936 where he became a U.S. citizen and proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps in World War II. During the war, he served with Counter Intelligence at Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces in London, England. After he was discharged from the armed forces, Dr. White was employed by the U.S. Department of Justice in Berlin, where he worked for the Military Government and U.S. Foreign Service. He returned to the U.S. in 1951. Dr. White is survived by a daughter, Lillian White of Venice Beach, California. A service of remembrance will be held Monday, December 8 at 4:00 PM in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Arden First Baptist Church, 3839 Sweeten Creek Road, Arden, NC 28704 or to the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565. Acknowledgments for contributions may be made to Clairene Brown, 2 Fairway Villas, Arden, NC 28704.

    My heart is so sad at the sudden passing of John. He was a very incredible gentleman and so brilliant. He loved you both so much and would want us to reach out to each other and those he cared for. Please know that my thoughts are with you. I hope to see you soon.
