John Harris Smith

John "Snuffy" Harris Smith, 88, of Fletcher, died Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Park Ridge Hospital. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Grady and Axie Letterman Smith. John was also preceded in death by his wife, Sue Belle Smith, who died in 2011; two sisters, Thelma Thompson and Jean Davis and five brothers, Dan Smith, Ed Smith, Will Smith, Ernest Smith and George Smith. John was a U.S Army Veteran serving during WWII and retired from ABF Trucking Co. after several years of employment. He is survived by one daughter, Rita Payne and her husband, Larry, of Fletcher; one son, John Smith and his wife, Alisa, of Gig Harbor, WA; two sisters, Sara Goodson and Ruth Novey, both of Fletcher; two grandchildren, Shannon and Amber as well as three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Calvary Churchyard in Fletcher. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.
