John Luther Roper, Jr. passed away May 7, 2021 at his home in Myrtle Beach, SC.
He was born April 19, 1943, in Columbus, GA, to the late John Luther Roper and Julia Ethelane Myers Roper. He was a veteran of both the US Air Force and as a SSG in the Florida National Guard and had been deployed to serve our country during Desert Storm. He also served as Police Chief and Mayor of Frostproof, FL.
John began his career as a forklift driver and progressed to certified purchasing manager before retiring from Cargill in Florida. He was also a member of the Upper Hominy Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary in Candler. While in Myrtle Beach, he worked at the Alabama Theater at Barefoot Landing.
He always left a lasting impression on anyone he met.
John is survived by his wife, Linda Y. Roper of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Robert Roper (Hazel) of Salem, AL; a son, Shan Roper (Melissa) of Steinhatchee, FL; daughters, Patti Roper (Anne) of Cataula, GA, Eva (Layna) Anderson (Adam) of Frostproof, FL; Laura Lawrence (Joseph) of Candler, NC and Carla Ball (Dennis) of Weaverville, NC; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services to include military honors will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Piney Mountain United Methodist Church Cemetery, 14 Piney Mountain Church Road, Candler, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one’s favorite charity or to Piney Mountain United Methodist Church Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, 14 Piney Mountain Church Road, Candler, NC 28715.
