John Manley Davis, of Midlothian, Virginia, passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday evening, June 28, 2011, at age 83. He was born on July 11, 1927 in Webster, North Carolina, and spent most of his early years in the West Asheville, North Carolina area. He served 24 years in the United States Navy on various conventional and nuclear ships, including the first nuclear-powered carrier, the USS Enterprise, where he was approved as part of the original crew by Admiral Rickover. He retired at the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, and was a decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After retirement from the Navy, he was employed by Dominion Virginia Power where he advanced through many positions during his 20 year career before retiring as the Manager of Nuclear Construction. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Hipps Davis. Survivors include his children, Johnnie Davis and husband, Marcelo Cavada, Charles B. Davis and wife, Stephanie Fletcher Davis, Kenneth A. Davis and wife, Katherine Helwig Davis, and Krishna Davis Moore and husband, Pieter Moore. Surviving grandchildren are Kathleen Davis, Michael Davis, Kiel Davis and wife, Bobbie Davis Velasquez, Brent Moore, McKennah Moore, and Madyson Moore. He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephew, Maxine Kilpatrick Gunter, Carlene Kilpatrick Bates, Joe Kilpatrick and wife Verniece (Tootsie) Raper Kilpatrick, and their families. Family visitation will be held at Woody Funeral Home on Huguenot Road (Midlothian VA) at 7 P.M. Wednesday, July 6, 2011. The memorial service will be held at his resting place, Oak Hill United Methodist Church in Candler, NC, on Sunday, July 10, 2011, at 2 PM. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, Asheville NC, will assist with the graveside service. John will be greatly missed in many lives for his generosity of spirit, never failing good humor and his conscientious endeavors to support his family, his community and his country. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Oak Hill Cemetery Fund, Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 277 Oak Hill Road, Candler, NC 28715.
