John T. McElrath, 72, of Ballard Cove Rd., Candler, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 17, 2000 after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late George W. and Charlotte Cogburn McElrath. He was a native of
Buncombe County where he resided his whole life. He was a dedicated and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Mr. McElrath was the founder of McElrath Roofing Co. where he worked for over 50 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist
Church.
He is survived by his wife, Frances L. Elliott McElrath; one daughter and son-in-law Phyllis Anne and William E. Godfrey of Candler; two grandsons, Steve and Mark Godfrey of Candler; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Amanda, Aimee, Shawn and McKayla Godfrey; three sisters, Vauda Clark and Bonnie Moses both of Candler and Alice Ezell of Raleigh, NC.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Revs. Bobby Winebarger and Eugene Dodd will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery with pallbearers being Steve and Mark Godfrey, Edward Godfrey, Lefaine
Howell, Buddy Ford and Keith Watts.
His family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
